Pie has been purchased by Google for building its engineering team for Southeast Asia as it looks to develop products for the region

On 18th February 2016 Google announced  that it’s establishing its own first engineering team for the Southeast Asian region, and the it has purchased Singaporean communication service provider -pie to start establishing it.

In 2015 Pie received $1.2 million in financing, Green Ventures was its largest financier in that year. The newly acquired organization is Google’s first acquisition in the region. The startup is offering a business chat application that provides teams with an opportunity to communicate without using the emailing service.

The acquisition wasn’t disclosed – both CEO and founder of Pie, Pieter Walraven and the search company refused to share its views regarding the price at which the organization has been acquired. The basic premise of Pie was too much similar to Slack and other well-funded competitors in the Asian region such as ChatWork and Eko- and it made efforts for differentiating itself with the help of its strategy to focus upon a very basic experience aimed at non- technological enterprises.

Tech Crunch had recently heard that Pie was trying to raise new funds– it seems that then fund raising had become difficult for it because of which it had to sell itself to the technology giant to attractively proceed in the competitive world.

The acquisition has been done for boosting a new team of Google to focus on the development of products for the Southeast Asian region by following the same method that the US Company has followed for India in 2015.

Tech Crunch has seen that the local efforts of Google has proved to be fruitful in India as the country’s railway stations have been provided with free- Wifi service. In addition to that, the company has developed dedicated applications, established a YouTube production studio, and equipped its YouTube with offline features and similar things could be expected by us in the Southeast Asian region, that is home to over 600m people.

Together with this agreement, the company has announced that it’s recruiting fresh graduates and engineers to become a part of its newly established unit. A new internship program was also opened by it for existing students, who have been provided an opportunity for spending 3 months at its office in Sydney, Australia.

Ultimately, the company has called existing employees in the United States who are interested in moving to Singapore or coming to the country. An event will be held by Google at Mountain View on 8th March with more details- that is strictly for current employees, however.
